Did I wash my fake leather jacket incorrectly?

I have an imitation leather jacket with a 100% polyester lining that I bought from H&M last year that I usually just wipe clean. But I took it on a trip recently and it got extremely dirty, so I decided to follow the instructions on the label and wash it. The instructions said to wash it on a gentle cycle with like colors in cold water, which I did, and then line dry it. It came out of the washer soaking wet, and was literally dripping water, which is a lot wetter than most of my other clothes were. And, it smells terrible, like the jacket is still dirty! All my other clothes smell very clean and like detergent! Will the smell go away after it dries completely, or did I wash it wrong? If so, how can I make the smell go away?!
