Is he hoping I'll give in?

my ex-bf and I were getting along great but we had a falling out over financial decisions having to do with the purchase of a house. He had broken up with another woman before he met me and she had left to go see another boyfriend she has. She was back when we had the falling out so he went back to her. She is abusive and uses information she knows about his family to tell him no one else will want him and he is afraid it's true nobody else will want him and he will end up alone if he breaks up with her and things don't work out with me. He recently asked me for a second chance and I said not while she is gone again; I told him instead of dating him while she is away( and helping him cheat on her and risk getting used if he is going to patch it up with her when she gets back) I would go to couples counseling with him and if he musters the courage to break up with her when she is back, then I would be willing to give him a second chance.If not, I won't because I don't want to be his back up gf and he already did that to me when he broke up with her before he met me, got me involved then went back to her. He agreed to this but doesn't seem too enthusiastic about the counseling. Is he just going along hoping I'll give in and be his back up while she is gone or what?
