Is ethnic strife the only reason for conflict between sinhalese and tamils in lanka? is religion also a reason

like is one of the other reasons for conflict because the sinhalese are buddhists and the tamils are hindus, and so the sinhalese want a total buddhsit country, and that upsets hindus? is there strife between hindus and buddhsits, whcih is one reason for conflict in sri lanka?
